2010 week 2

In the spirit of Orwell, Pepys and Twitter, a journal of daily minutiae recorded for posterity. Until I get bored with it.

.

Fri 8 Jan: Stayed a bit late at work yesterday and today, making up lost time from Wednesday morning. Lunch from RMH again: chicken tikka with veg and rice. It’s about one-third more expensive than the food court on campus, but good quality food. The chicken tikka had whole cloves and cardamom pods — my breath was fragrant all afternoon. Letter from Barwon Water says I live in an area of extreme fire danger, according to the new way of assessing these things — and that BW doesn’t guarantee water supply in time of emergency. Nice.

Sat 9 Jan: Up at 6.00 am to let the cats out. Fed cats, had a bit of breakfast (wholemeal Salada with Vegemite). Had intended to go to bank today and do some other messages, but fell asleep bolt upright at table without even finishing my breakfast cuppa. Bestirred self some time between 10.00 and 11.00 am, gathering just enough wits to stagger back to bed. Slept soundly until 6.30 pm, fed cats, did a bit of grocery shopping, went back to bed.

Sun 10 Jan: Battened down the hatches, expecting a hot day; it turned out quite mild (mid-20s with southerly sea breeze). Mild bout of gastro again – same as earlier in week. Spent most of day feeling queasy and making sudden dashes to the loo; better by about 3.00 pm. Watched videos (West Wing), did a bit of reading. Dinner with parents at Clifton Springs – sweet’n'sour chicken stir-fry with white rice. Dad easily tired but otherwise doing well; Mum’s found a new skin cancer on the side of her foot. Knitted five rows of cable throw; messed up row 5, but it’s not particularly noticeable. If anybody ever comments, I’ll say it’s a secret Aran code.

Monday 11 Jan: First 40-plus degree day of the year. Closed up the house again and left a fan on a timer to shift the air around during the afternoon. Would have left the ‘portable’ air conditioner on automatic, but Josephine is frightened of it and runs away to the hottest part of the house whenever it’s switched on. She’s learned to tolerate the sensation of the electric fan ruffling her tummy fur, so that will have to do for now.

Tue 12 Jan: Two cool changes arrived, one in the morning and another in the evening. Lovely. Helen flew to London yesterday; it’s snowing all over the UK – lucky woman!

Wed 13 Jan: Paul’s birthday. I’m having some trouble adjusting to the early night-early morning routine, and have been arriving for work at around 8.45 am. Must do better, as traffic is starting to build up again after the Festivus holidays. Dreadful earthquake in Haiti, sounds like the whole country has been flattened.

Thu 14 Jan: Worked a total of 30.5 hours this week. Some web bits, some project planning, some mentoring re project management and a bit of intellectual work on strategy documents — a good mix of tasks. Union House food court has reopened this week, so I dropped in to see the kids at the curry shop; they’re as cheerful as ever. A box of goodies arrived from Vogue Patterns: their online shop had a sale on New Year’s Eve, so I chose half a dozen (or so) Vintage Vogue and out-of-print patterns that were going cheap.
