Finally got around to planting some roses that have been hanging around in pots for a while. Four bushes are now planted in a row in the new bed across the back verandah, facing north:
- Rosa Claude Monet (that’s Claude, in the photo)
- Rosa floribunda, Burgundy Iceberg
- Hot Chocolate
- and a newbie acquired this week, Little Romeo.
I’ve alternated these with lavenders to help keep pests (eg aphids) under control:
- Lavandula pedunculata “Blueberry Ruffles”
- Lavandula pedunculata “Boysenberry Ruffles”
- Lavandula pedunculata “Mulberry Ruffles”
In the front garden, towards the southern end of the main bedroom’s western wall, I’ve plonked a climbing rose, Black Boy. It’s very thorny and produces single rather than double flowers that are a velvety dark red and have an old-fashioned rose scent. Black Boy is one of my earliest garden memories. I’m hoping this one will spread across the brick wall and provide some insulation from summer afternoon heat.
Beside Black Boy are two small clumps of ground cover, Isotoma fluviatilis or Blue Star Creeper. This is an Australian native that is said to be a good lawn substitute; if it takes in the garden bed, I’ll try transplanting some runners into the lawn nearby.
While I had the spade out, I tucked three Cosmos astrosanguineus (chocolate cosmos) into the bed behind the daphne, along the western fence.
Then the cats had fun playing with the water from the hose. Yay.
